Brazil's socialist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva just called offshore oil drilling near the Amazon a "passport to the country's future" — while the Biden administration continues to choke American oil and gas production at every turn.
The contrast lays bare the hypocrisy: foreign leaders put their nations' energy security first, while Washington kneecaps the working Americans who need cheap, reliable power most.
Petrobras, Brazil's majority state-owned oil company, announced Friday it detected hydrocarbons during exploratory drilling about 112 miles off the coast of Amapa state, according to the Associated Press. The Equatorial Margin basin could hold up to 10 billion barrels of oil — worth roughly $720 billion. Lula, wearing an oil worker's orange uniform, held up a bottle of crude he called "blessed" and said he wanted to keep it in a safe.
"When I say 'passport,'" Lula said, "I'm not denying my commitment to the fight for a day when we no longer need fossil fuels, because Brazil will continue to be the king of biofuel innovation and will remain a major player in renewable energy."
Translation: even a leftist who hosts U.N. climate summits knows you can't run a country on wishes and windmills. Lula is pushing green transition rhetoric and new drilling investments simultaneously — because he faces a tight October election against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, and he needs results.
Petrobras president Magda Chambriard said the discovery confirms substantial potential and the company will continue exploring. Environmental and Indigenous groups have sued to halt the project, claiming the licensing process ignored consultation requirements and underestimated spill risks. Petrobras has countered it has never caused spills in its drillings.
Commercial extraction remains years away. Energy expert Shigueo Watanabe Jr. of the Brazilian nonprofit ClimaInfo told the AP that determining commercial viability could take up to a decade.

The real story for Americans isn't under the Amazon — it's at home. Brazil's leftist government sees $720 billion in domestic oil reserves and calls it a passport to the future. The Biden regime looks at American reserves and sees something to shut down. Every barrel Brazil pumps is a barrel of leverage. Every permit Biden denies is a strategic loss handed to competitors.
The question isn't whether Brazil should drill. The question is why our own government won't let us.
