The strikes came as Ukraine has escalated its own attacks deep into Russian territory, hitting oil and gas facilities and, over the weekend, two warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer. Russian authorities reported eight killed and 62 injured in those Ukrainian strikes. Wildberries CEO Tatiana Kim called it "a pain that cannot be put into words." Zelensky claimed the warehouses served as "major logistics facilities" used to "supply sanctioned components for drone production and navigation equipment."
Meanwhile, back in the country our leaders actually swear an oath to, Breitbart reports that at least 11 people were shot Friday into Saturday afternoon in Chicago alone — two fatally. A man was stabbed and then shot in a domestic incident on West Marquette Road; a 25-year-old was shot in the head on South Princeton Avenue. The Chicago Sun-Times counts 228 murders in the city so far in 2026.
The New York Times framed the Kyiv assault as part of a dramatic escalation cycle — Russia's bombardment coinciding with Ukraine's increasingly successful strikes on Russian infrastructure. What the Times didn't frame is the cost to the American taxpayer bankrolling this spiral, or the strategic endgame. The word "peace" appears nowhere in the reporting. Breitbart, for its part, covered Chicago's weekend carnage with its usual focus on Democrat governance, but drew no line connecting domestic disorder to the billions shipped overseas.
Here is the connection neither outlet will make: every missile interceptor, every artillery shell, every billion-dollar aid package sent to prolong a war with no defined objective is a resource not spent securing the country our leaders are actually paid to govern. The war escalates precisely because Washington sends weapons without demanding a strategy for peace. Ukraine hits Russian warehouses; Russia flattens Kyiv neighborhoods; the cycle accelerates — and the arms shipments keep flowing with no exit condition, no defined American interest, and no end in sight.
Two hundred twenty-eight dead in Chicago six months into the year. A war grinding on with no diplomatic off-ramp in sight. The bipartisan establishment has made its priority clear: foreign borders first, American streets whenever there's spare change.
The open question is how long Americans keep paying for a war they were never asked to vote on — and how many weekends like Chicago's it takes before the people who fund the world's security demand some at home.
