ICE officers across the country were told this weekend to stop arresting illegal immigrants who lack criminal convictions or charges — a quiet directive that pulls enforcement back to only the worst offenders, even as DHS leadership publicly celebrates a crackdown on murderers and rapists still walking American streets.
The order matters because it narrows the definition of who ICE can touch. Being in the country illegally is, by definition, a violation of federal law. Telling agents to ignore that — and only act once an illegal alien has racked up a criminal conviction on top of their unlawful presence — is a deliberate erosion of immigration enforcement by executive directive, not by any vote in Congress.
According to the Daily Caller, agency sources told the Daily Wire's Jennie Taer that ICE officers were instructed to stop arresting non-criminals and may now only arrest illegal immigrants with criminal convictions or charges for the time being. The directive came down over the weekend — standard timing for moves designed to avoid attention.
Meanwhile, Breitbart reported on a slate of recent ICE arrests of illegal aliens convicted of murder, child sexual abuse, rape, and other serious felonies. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin celebrated the arrests: "While Americans enjoyed their weekend, the brave men and women of ICE arrested murderers, child sexual predators, and child abusers who should not have been in our country in the first place."
Among those arrested: Sakhone Lasaphangthong of Laos and Ruben Ayala-Laies of Cuba, both previously convicted of murder; Jose Alcaraz-Carranza of Mexico, convicted of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14; and Edgar Tranquilino Moran-Bautista of Mexico, convicted of sodomy by force. Breitbart's full list includes additional convictions for assault, heroin and fentanyl distribution, burglary, and fraud.
Mullin framed the arrests as proof that "under President Trump, ICE has been unleashed to target and remove illegal aliens from our communities so that we can make America safe again."
The two stories don't contradict each other — they complement each other, and that's the problem. DHS can point to arrests of murderers and child rapists while quietly telling agents to let every illegal alien without a criminal record walk free. The public gets the headline; the enforcement gets the leash.
This is the same shell game Washington plays on immigration across administrations: announce the tough-sounding action, bury the quiet restraint. The Daily Caller framed the stand-down order as a direct pullback on enforcement. Breitbart buried it entirely, running a victory-lap story on the serious-criminal arrests without mentioning the concurrent directive narrowing who agents can touch going forward.
The open question is how many illegal aliens without criminal convictions will now remain in the country — and how many of them will graduate to the criminal-conviction category before ICE is allowed to act.
