Lake Powell just hit its lowest level ever recorded, putting hydroelectric power and drinking water for millions of Americans at immediate risk — while Washington sends billions overseas and can't keep the lights on at home.
The second-largest reservoir in the United States dropped to 3,519.91 feet above sea level on Saturday, according to Bureau of Reclamation data — barely below the previous record of 3,519.92 set in April 2023. The lake is now just 30 feet above "minimum power pool," the threshold where Glen Canyon Dam's turbines stop generating electricity for the Southwest. Drop another 30 feet past that and you hit "dead pool," where water can't even flow downstream. That means draconian cuts to drinking water for millions and imperiled farms 500 miles away in California's Imperial Valley.
Lake Mead outside Las Vegas hit its own record low on August 7. The last time the two reservoirs' combined storage was this small was May 1957 — when Glen Canyon Dam was still being built.
Federal officials warned in April that a "major intervention" would be necessary to avoid reaching minimum power pool by year's end. They've been pulling water from smaller upstream reservoirs to buy time. The Bureau of Reclamation proposed a 10-year plan in July that includes major water cuts for Arizona, California, and Nevada. But seven Western states still can't agree on a long-term management plan.
PBS framed the crisis as driven by "persistent overuse combined with a record-dry winter and rising temperatures." USA Today leaned harder on climate change, quoting Colorado Assistant State Climatologist Peter Goble: "There's no way to look at the numbers and think the Colorado River is doing well right now. In a world that's warmer, all signs point to droughts that will be more intense and more frequent." Both outlets buried the question of where federal priorities — and dollars — have been for decades while this crisis built.
Proposed fixes range from practical to absurd: piping water from the Mississippi River into Arizona, towing icebergs from the polar regions, building nuclear-powered desalination plants off California's coast, or removing Glen Canyon Dam entirely. Aaron Weiss of the Center for Western Priorities told USA Today the solutions will be "both really hard and really urgent" and will "have to happen rapidly."
The crisis is also hitting regular Americans who depend on the lake for their livelihoods. Marinas have been forced to relocate to deeper water. Boat ramps have closed or moved. An estimated 4 million recreation visitors a year come to the area — and the local economies that serve them are watching the water recede.
The Colorado River system serves seven Western states, Native American tribes, and two Mexican states — providing drinking water, irrigation, hydroelectricity, and wildlife habitat. The only time these reservoirs were this low was when they were first being filled.
The question isn't whether the water is running out. It is. The question is why the federal government can find blank checks for foreign aid and domestic social programs but can't manage the basic infrastructure that keeps the lights on and the taps running for 40 million Americans.
