Elon Musk wants SpaceX employees to be more than rocket builders—he wants them to be the "parents" of Grok AI, training the next model on their work, ideas, and the sum total of SpaceX's internal data. The stake for ordinary Americans: this is private enterprise building AI with American engineering talent, not a government-approved sandbox where bureaucrats decide what the machine is allowed to think.

During a recent SpaceX all-hands meeting shared on X, Musk told workers they would "effectively be the parents of the AI," because Grok would inherit their "thoughts and ideas and beliefs." He argued SpaceX's workforce includes some of the world's strongest engineers and that their collective knowledge could shape a more capable system. "So in a way, it will be trained on you," Musk said.

The precise categories of employee information that will be used have not been publicly detailed. SpaceX has not provided a comprehensive explanation of what data will be included or how it will be handled. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

Both Fortune and NewsBreak covered the story straight, but neither pushed hard on what data gets vacuumed up—or who consents. NewsBreak added that Musk compared building data centers to the "New York Yankees going in and playing a Little League team," framing the buildout as a cinch for SpaceX talent.

There is a legitimate privacy question here. In April, Meta rolled out its Model Capability Initiative, capturing employee mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes, and screenshots to train AI agents on how people navigate computers. Meta claimed the data wouldn't be used for performance reviews and that safeguards existed. Roughly 1,600 Meta employees signed a petition opposing the program. Musk's pitch is different in kind—he's talking about institutional knowledge and engineering contributions, not keystroke surveillance—but the boundary between "your ideas" and "your data" remains undefined.

Musk is betting big. He projected AI revenue could surpass all of SpaceX's other businesses as soon as September, and that 10 gigawatts of AI computing capacity could generate between $300 billion and $500 billion in annual revenue. SpaceX currently has about 1.4 gigawatts of AI computing capacity and is targeting 10 gigawatts by the end of 2027. Starlink, the satellite internet service, is now in 167 countries with 22 million mobile users.

SpaceX went public in June, selling 555.56 million shares and raising roughly $75 billion. IPO documents stated proceeds would fund growth strategy, including AI computing infrastructure. First earnings showed stronger-than-expected revenue.

Follow the money: Musk is plowing public capital into AI infrastructure at a scale Washington can only dream of mandating. The question isn't whether private American enterprise can outbuild the government—it's whether regulators will let it.
