The White House North Portico is emerging from its scaffolding, restored and ready for a state visit — and the press corps that spent four years pretending Joe Biden was sharp as a tack wants you to be outraged about the construction noise.
Scaffolding came down over Labor Day weekend, unveiling refurbished stonework and plaster on the iconic columned entrance that dates to Andrew Jackson's presidency. The work, ordered by President Trump after he personally observed what he called its "deplorable condition," began in June and wraps just as Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives for a Sept. 24 state dinner. The Associated Press covered the basics straight — routine damage from age and weather, standard restoration. Then the spin machine cranked up.
The Daily Beast branded the whole effort a "vanity project" after a construction worker required a "high-angle rescue" Monday — the first injury reported across Trump's slate of federal construction projects. A workplace injury is news, certainly. But one injured worker on a major restoration site is a safety incident, not a scandal. The Beast didn't see it that way, lumping the portico in with every other Trump building project to paint a picture of chaos.
Here's where legitimate questions do exist. Trump promised his signature ballroom and underground bunker project would cost $200 million, entirely from private donations. According to the Daily Beast, the price tag has ballooned past $600 million — $307 million of it from federal accounts. That's real taxpayer money, and it deserves real scrutiny. Trump also demolished the East Wing before clearing the usual regulatory hurdles for historic federal buildings, triggering multiple lawsuits. A president who bypasses preservation law is a president testing constitutional boundaries, and that's worth watching regardless of party.
But notice what the press emphasizes and what it buries. The same outlets hyperventilating over a helipad on the South Lawn and the color of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool — yes, a $14.7 million "American flag blue" dye job that turned sickly green from an algal bloom, per the Daily Beast — couldn't be bothered to ask hard questions about Biden's condition for four years. The reflecting pool fiasco, including a botched DOJ prosecution of Olympic canoeist David Hearn, is a genuine waste of taxpayer dollars. The 250-foot "triumphal arch" near Arlington, which the National Park Service found would adversely affect dozens of historic sites, is also fair game.
The framing split tells you everything. The AP and its syndicate partners reported the portico restoration as what it is — needed repairs on a nearly 200-year-old structure. The Beast led with "vanity" and worked backward. Historic preservationists, who sued over the East Wing demolition, have a case on process grounds. But the broader media posture — that Trump maintaining the People's House is inherently suspect — is the same reflex that called riots "mostly peaceful" and called Biden lucid.
Trump builds. The press tears down. Sometimes the building deserves criticism. But the critics have earned none of the trust they demand.
