The CDC rushed out a safety alert Friday warning Americans to throw out their alfalfa sprouts after 55 people fell ill with E. coli and salmonella across 15 states. Four people were hospitalized. Nobody died. Meanwhile, fentanyl kills over 100 Americans every single day, youth mental health has collapsed, and the CDC has yet to account for the wreckage of the mandates it pushed during COVID. The regulatory state has its priorities — and protecting ordinary Americans isn't one of them.
This is institutional mismanagement by design. When 55 people get stomach cramps from tainted sprouts, the CDC mobilizes a multistate investigation, the FDA inspects facilities, and the press obligingly amplifies the alert. When fentanyl poisons entire communities, when teenage depression and suicide skyrocket, when government mandates force healthy Americans out of their jobs — silence, or worse, denial.
The outbreak itself is real enough. Everything Sprouts, a Minnesota grower, is recalling its 5-ounce containers of alfalfa sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands since May 27, according to the CDC and FDA. Of the 55 sickened, 46 were infected with E. coli, seven with salmonella, and two with both. Most cases clustered in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Bill Marler, a Seattle food safety lawyer, told NBC News it is "very unusual to have two bugs" in one outbreak. He noted sprouts are especially vulnerable because seeds harbor contaminants and warm-water growing conditions let them spread.
Here's what the outlets buried: the FDA had already flagged Everything Sprouts last year for "serious violations" after inspectors found roof leaks dripping water onto produce and "build-up of black organic matter" on the overhead irrigation system hose, ABC News reported. The government knew this facility was filthy — and let it keep operating until people got sick. That is not a regulatory success story. That is a failure of enforcement the CDC is now spinning as a triumph of early warning.
The company claims it tested products daily during the outbreak and "have not received any positive lab results," according to its recall notice. So a filthy facility with known violations kept shipping sprouts for months, the CDC watched, and now we're supposed to applaud the alert.
The CDC urges Americans to see a doctor immediately if they have diarrhea and a fever over 102 degrees. Fine. But where is that urgency when the crisis is fentanyl? Where are the alerts about the mental health catastrophe the CDC's own data documents? Where is the accountability for the institutional failures that actually cost American lives?
The regulatory state doesn't protect you. It manages you. It issues sprout alerts so you'll believe it's on the job, while the real killers walk through the front door unimpeded. Fifty-five stomach bugs get a press conference. A hundred thousand dead Americans get a shrug.
