NASA's $4.3 billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launches Sunday on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy — and the establishment press can't stop framing Trump's attempt to cut its budget as an attack on science, rather than basic fiscal discipline.

The Guardian's headline declares the telescope "survived Trump budget cuts." That framing — fiscal responsibility recast as anti-knowledge — is the real story. A president proposed trimming a $4.3 billion line item, twice, and the bureaucracy and its media allies treated it like vandalism. The telescope survived. The spending never gets questioned.

The Roman telescope, named for NASA's first chief of astronomy who died in 2018, has been in the works for nearly a decade. According to NASA senior project scientist Julie McEnery, the need was conceived at the end of the last century, development began in 2016, and full project approval came in 2020. The price tag: $4.3 billion and counting. The mission: hunt exoplanets, study dark matter and dark energy, and survey the Milky Way in a month. Its 300-megapixel infrared camera delivers Hubble-level sharpness across a field of view 100 times larger. Over five years, Roman will image 50 times as much sky as Hubble captured in three decades. A coronagraph instrument blocks star glare to photograph planets orbiting other stars directly. NASA says imagery will be made public immediately — a rare good call on transparency.

Here's what the budget-cut hand-wringing buries: it's Elon Musk's SpaceX doing the actual heavy lifting. A Falcon Heavy rocket will carry Roman from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex-39A to Lagrange point 2, a gravitational parking spot roughly 930,000 miles from Earth. Liftoff is set for 7:26 a.m. EDT Sunday, with a backup window Monday at 7:22 a.m. Weather looks favorable.
