Thomas Weir Pauken II, 51, a Texas native, pleaded guilty to working at the direction of China's Ministry of State Security, attempting to infiltrate U.S. political circles and supply equipment to a potential spy seeking a job inside the Trump administration. He received at least $100,000 for his efforts, according to the Department of Justice. The case confirms what anyone paying attention already suspected: the press isn't just ideologically tilted — it's operationally compromised.
Pauken moved to China in 2010 and worked for several Chinese news organizations, including state broadcaster CCTV. His most recent position was as an editor for Xinhua, China's state news agency — a job he held as recently as 2024. He published under the alias Tom McGregor, reportedly at the request of his father, Thomas W. Pauken Sr., a former chairman of the Texas Republican Party.
