A Harris County grand jury indicted ICE agent Mario Alberto Morales Friday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly driving his unmarked SUV into a Mexican construction worker — and the establishment press is already treating one agent's conduct as an indictment of all border enforcement.

The facts of the case are serious. Surveillance video obtained by NBC's Houston affiliate shows Morales's Jeep Cherokee jump a yellow median and swerve toward Miguel Parra Hernandez, 48, as he ran across a restaurant parking lot on October 10. The moment of impact is blocked from view by a parked truck, but Parra Hernandez is then seen on the ground. He suffered a broken leg, hip and ankle injuries, according to his family.

ICE's official account, released the day after the incident, said Parra Hernandez "ran in front of an ICE vehicle and was struck." Agent Morales repeated that claim on a 911 call. Harris County DA Sean Teare says the video clearly contradicts ICE's story and called the evidence "as clear as any that I've ever prosecuted or investigated."

ICE fired back, calling the indictment "nothing more than a political stunt by Houston sanctuary politicians" and claiming local authorities lack jurisdiction to investigate federal officers. Teare says that's "false." DHS placed an officer on administrative leave after the collision.

There's more that stinks. CNN reported that ICE claimed its target that day was one Jose Mendoza-Cervantes, said to have been in a vehicle with Parra Hernandez. But the immigrant rights group FIEL says Mendoza-Cervantes's daughter told them her father has been dead since 2017. ICE has not responded to that claim. Teare's office says its investigation found no evidence the two men were in a vehicle together.

Teare also accused DHS of destroying evidence "either intentionally or through gross negligence" and said Morales fled the scene before the vehicle could be impounded.

Now watch the framing. The Guardian called it part of a "frequently violent immigration crackdown" and gave DA Teare room to lecture that ICE tactics are "objectively making us all less safe," citing a drop in crime reports from illegal immigrants who fear deportation. CNN and NBC both gave the story extensive play. The Gateway Pundit, meanwhile, framed Teare as a "far-left" DA and noted — accurately — that the July shooting Teare is also investigating involved a suspect who rammed an ICE vehicle before being fatally shot, a detail CNN only mentions as "disputed" by other passengers.

Here's what the coverage won't tell you: while CNN and NBC dedicate word count to one agent's alleged assault, the cartels pumping fentanyl across that same southern border are killing roughly 100,000 Americans a year. You won't see a fraction of this coverage for the communities hollowed out by those deaths. One agent's misconduct is a newsroom gift; 100,000 bodies are a statistic they'd rather skip.

If Morales deliberately ran down a man who posed no threat, he should face the law like anyone else — badge or no badge. But the press isn't interested in accountability for one agent. They're interested in discrediting enforcement itself, and they've found their vehicle.
