Google let the tech press and consumers believe its new Tensor G6 chip was the first smartphone processor built on TSMC's cutting-edge 2nm process — then quietly admitted it's running on last-generation 3nm tech instead. For ordinary Americans dropping a thousand dollars on a Pixel 11, that means paying premium prices for hardware that isn't the leap forward Google allowed everyone to advertise.

According to 9to5Google, Google's own VP of Hardware, Peng Yu-chun, told CNA that the Tensor G6 is produced on TSMC's 3nm process — not the 2nm node that had been widely reported ahead of launch. That's a straight admission that the breakthrough claim was false. Yet Gizmodo still ran a story calling the G6 "the first Tensor processor to be manufactured using a 2nm process" and breathlessly explaining how smaller transistors deliver "improved efficiency and faster AI processing." They printed the hype as fact.

Wccftech flagged the deception early. After the Pixel 11 unveiling, Google offered zero confirmation of the 2nm lithography — and if you actually achieve an industry first, you don't bury it. The DevCheck app, which displays a phone's manufacturing process, clearly identifies Samsung's Exynos 2600 as a 2nm SoC but shows nothing of the kind for the Tensor G6. Wccftech called the omission "suspicious," and they're right. Google also claims 20% better power efficiency, but as Wccftech noted, the company removed a CPU core from the configuration — so that efficiency gain may come from doing less, not from better manufacturing.

The pattern is familiar. Big Tech lets favorable rumors circulate to juice pre-orders and stock price, then walks the claims back after the money is locked in. Nobody at the FTC or in Washington will ask questions because Google is one of the largest lobbying spenders in the country. The same regulators who should be protecting consumers from false marketing are funded by the companies they're supposed to police.

Google did announce real upgrades: 25% faster web browsing, 15% quicker app launches, 50% more TPU compute for on-device AI, and a new Titan M3 security chip. Those are improvements. But they're not the 2nm breakthrough that dominated headlines and convinced buyers this was a next-generation device.

The question isn't whether Google lied outright — it's that they let a false narrative drive coverage and sales, then declined to correct it until after pre-orders opened. That's not a bug. It's a business model.
