Google just gave its AI assistant the keys to your wallet — and killed the only alternative you had to avoid it.
Two moves landing at the same time tell you everything about where Big Tech is taking ordinary Americans: Gemini can now pull your Google Wallet passes, loyalty cards, and transaction data into its AI, and Google Assistant has been fully replaced by Gemini on Android devices, with no way to switch back. The company that already reads your email, tracks your location, and watches your searches now wants to be your financial advisor — whether you asked for one or not.
Android Police reported that Gemini's new Connected App feature lets the AI access information from saved passes, event tickets, boarding passes, and loyalty cards. It also provides what Google calls "personalized insights" based on transaction data from financial accounts you've linked through Plaid, the third-party service that connects your bank to apps. You can ask Gemini to summarize your grocery spending for the month or check your available rewards. Android Police framed this as Gemini getting "another piece of your day."
Here's what Android Police buried at the bottom: if you ever unlink Wallet from Gemini, your previously saved transaction information stays in Google's hands. You have to delete it manually. Unlinking is not deleting. Google keeps the data. That's not a feature — that's a trap.
Meanwhile, 9to5Google reported that Google Assistant is now dead on Android phones, tablets, Wear OS devices, headphones, and Android Auto. The "Switch to Google Assistant" setting has been removed entirely. You can no longer "use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices," per Google's own language. 9to5Google framed this as a straightforward tech migration, noting the change rolled out across the US and Europe. What 9to5Google didn't mention at all: the Wallet integration happening at the exact same time, or what it means that the company forcing you onto its AI is the same company now pulling your financial life into that same AI.
The convergence is the story. Google isn't just replacing one assistant with another. It's replacing an assistant that didn't need your bank data with one that does — and removing your ability to say no. Gemini cannot currently execute transactions or directly access linked financial accounts, according to Android Police. But it can read, summarize, and store your spending patterns. That data is now sitting inside an AI system the company controls end to end.
The rollout is gradual and limited to users 18 and older in the US, so not every American will see the Wallet integration immediately. You can check whether it's active in your account under Settings > Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps. If it's there and you don't want Google's AI rifling through your finances, turn it off — and then go manually delete whatever transaction data it already grabbed.
Where are the regulators? Nowhere. No hearing, no statement, no scrutiny. The same Washington that holds press conferences about TikTok has nothing to say when the company that controls the world's search engine, email, phone operating system, and browser consolidates your financial data into its AI. The bipartisan silence tells you whose interests are being served.
The question isn't whether Google can do this. It's whether anyone with power will ever tell them they can't — and whether Americans will get a real choice before the digital panopticon locks shut.
