A Republican senator is demanding the Judiciary Committee subpoena both Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden over foreign paydays — and the establishment press is already spinning it as a false-equivalence story to protect the Biden side of the ledger.
Sen. John Curtis of Utah wrote to Chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking member Dick Durbin on Monday calling for investigations into whether either man unlawfully traded on his father's presidency for money or perks. The trigger: ProPublica reported that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev — a close Putin associate who runs the International Boxing Association — picked up the tab for Trump Jr.'s Bahamas wedding reception in May, including a private island and a fireworks show.
"The country should not have to accept one standard for the family of a Republican president and another for the family of a Democratic president," Curtis wrote. He's right. But watch what happens next: the press will amplify the Trump Jr. angle and memory-hole the fact that Hunter Biden collected millions from foreign interests — including Russian-linked entities — while his father shaped U.S. policy toward those same countries.
Curtis cited Trump Jr.'s "active promotion of family-backed cryptocurrency ventures," international real estate deals involving meetings with foreign heads of state, and investments in defense contracting. On the wedding cash, Curtis didn't mince words: "A toaster is a wedding gift. A private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch is something else."
Bettina Trump defended the arrangement on Instagram, calling Kremlev a "close friend" and the celebration "an extraordinarily generous wedding gift." The president, first lady, and Barron skipped the event, though Eric, Ivanka, and Tiffany attended alongside Kremlev and roughly 50 guests, according to the New York Post.
Here's where the double standard kicks in. Curtis noted that "Republicans nearly wore out the subpoena machine investigating Hunter Biden's foreign relationships" and said "we should not unplug it now." Fair enough — but the same media apparatus that dismissed Hunter Biden's laptop as Russian disinformation, that looked the other way while he sat on the board of Burisma collecting $50,000 a month while his father ran Ukraine policy, will now treat a Putin-connected oligarch paying for a wedding party as proof that "both sides do it."
They don't. Hunter Biden's foreign entanglements were systemic, lucrative, and directly overlapped with Joe Biden's policy portfolio. Trump Jr. taking a Russian oligarch's party tab stinks — Curtis said so himself — but the scale and policy overlap aren't the same, and the press knows it.
Meanwhile, the broader political environment is souring for Republicans regardless. According to Raw Story, GOP strategists worry that even tens of millions in late super PAC spending may not offset voter anger over gas prices hitting $4.48 a gallon and fatigue with an administration focused on everything except household budgets. One House Republican from a safe district put it plainly: "The bottom's beginning to fall out."
Curtis deserves credit for refusing to unplug the oversight machine just because his party holds the White House. The question is whether the same standard will actually be applied — or whether the press will use Trump Jr. to wash Hunter Biden clean.
