Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Megan Romer went on national television to explicitly call for dismantling the U.S. Constitution—and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is refusing to rule out delivering on part of that radical wishlist if Democrats take the majority.
This isn't a fringe campus project; it is the stated agenda of the DSA, a movement with deep pockets and a proven grip on Democratic primaries. Romer’s demands to scrap the constitutional order and open the borders are actively echoing through the Democratic caucus, where leaders are already holding government funding hostage over immigration enforcement.
During an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Romer confirmed the DSA platform piece by piece. Abolish the Senate? “True.” Abolish ICE? “Absolutely.” Abolish borders and give amnesty to illegal aliens? “As a long-term plan, yep.” Abolish prisons and seize private corporations? “Yeah, absolutely.”
Romer justified scrapping the Senate by calling it an “anachronistic institution” that “comes from the British House of Lords” and is “meant to protect power” by ensuring “the people didn’t have too much of a say.” She wants to replace it with a unicameral legislature. The founders designed the Senate precisely to prevent the mob rule Romer is pushing, but the DSA is no longer hiding its goal to collapse constitutional checks and balances.
The Democratic establishment is playing along. Jeffries told CNN’s “State of the Union” he wouldn't rule out a vote to abolish ICE if Democrats retake the House, though he downplayed the push. He framed the resistance as standing up to “Donald Trump’s violent mass deportation machine” and bragged that Democrats have already forced government shutdowns by refusing to fund ICE without “dramatic reform.”
The DSA’s access is backed by hard electoral cash and primary muscle. The New York Post reported that Zohran Mamdani-backed candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, who recently ousted Rep. Adriano Espaillat in a primary, campaigned on abolishing ICE and scrubbed past social media posts about abolishing prisons. Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Sanders is actively meddling in House primaries, clashing with Jeffries over interventions in North Carolina, proving the socialist wing is fighting for institutional control of the party.
Romer and the DSA are telling the public exactly what they want: the wholesale demolition of the American constitutional republic. The open question is whether the Democratic leadership will keep providing the institutional ladder for the revolution, or if voters will shut the door before the dismantling begins.
