A Reading mother was shot dead in her own kitchen, allegedly by her 22-year-old son — and now her neighbors are left holding candles and asking what went wrong. Andria Hanafin, 49, was found dead in her Central Avenue home on Oct. 8 after her husband returned from work around 12:40 a.m. and discovered her body, according to authorities. Her 13-year-old son was inside the house at the time.
The Town of Reading will hold a candlelight vigil Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. at Memorial Park on Harrison Street. "In light of the loss of our neighbor, Andria Hanafin, we invite the Reading community to a candlelight vigil to honor and remember a life taken too soon," town officials wrote. "Even in the darkest moments, we stand together as a community."
Ryan Hanafin faces charges of murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Woburn District Court. After the killing, he fled — triggering a multi-agency manhunt. A Vermont state trooper spotted his car and took him into custody around 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 8, court records show.
The timeline is grim. The 13-year-old last saw his mother alive around 5 p.m. Ryan Hanafin's car was spotted leaving around 7:30 p.m. Sometime in that window, a mother was killed in her own home, with a child present. The daughter was away at school — spared by circumstance, not by the system.
This is the space where government fails and community steps in. No protective order, no intervention, no state program stopped what happened in that kitchen. The state arrives after the fact — with crime scene tape, with charges, with a manhunt. The vigil is what Americans do when the institutions that are supposed to prevent tragedy only show up to document it. Faith and fellowship answer when the state cannot# cannot.
MassLive reported the facts of the case and the vigil, framing it as a community coming together in grief — which it is.
