Working Americans already squeezed by inflation and stagnant wages now get to pay premium prices for a device that treats them like a liability the moment it leaves the box.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max packs a single-cell battery exceeding 20 watt-hours, a threshold that triggers stricter shipping regulations in most countries. Rather than design around the constraint, Apple chose to ship the phone with firmware capping the battery below 20 Wh until the user activates it. According to Apple's own support document, the company calls this an "innovative battery-firmware solution." Innovation used to mean building something better. Now it means building something bigger and then software-gating it to sidestep regulatory hassle.
Both 9to5Mac and MacRumors confirmed the details. The restriction doesn't end at first activation. Any time you ship the device — for repair, trade-in, return, resale, or even gifting — you must use a new "Prepare to Ship" feature buried in Settings under General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. The feature discharges the battery below 20 Wh and enforces a charge limit during transit.
9to5Mac emphasized the battery's size as the driver, framing the firmware lock as a necessary accommodation. MacRumors laid out the mechanics more bluntly, noting the 14-day waiting period that can lock users out of undoing the shipping preparation depending on the reason selected — a detail 9to5Mac omitted entirely.
Here's what that means in practice: if your $1,200 phone breaks and you need it serviced, you may wait up to a couple of hours for the battery to drain, during which Apple warns the device "might become warmer than usual." If you erased the phone before starting the process, you can't even use it while it discharges. And if you triggered the feature for certain reasons, you're stuck for two weeks before you can reverse it.
No other iPhone model requires this procedure, since no other iPhone crosses the 20 Wh single-cell threshold. Apple emphasized the device is safe for shipping and air travel — but the burden of compliance falls entirely on the customer.
