A black pickup truck plowed through a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, killing a child and an adult and sending multiple other victims to the hospital — and police have a driver in custody but won't say who he is, whether he meant to do it, or why two juveniles were riding along with him when it happened.

This is what a shattered community looks like when the people in charge of protecting it clamp shut. The Wichita Police Department labeled the strike at Stryker Sports Complex a "mass casualty incident" and begged the public for video evidence, but offered almost nothing on the person responsible. Captain Aaron Moses confirmed the driver is in custody, confirmed two juveniles were inside the vehicle, and then stopped short of everything else — no name, no age, no word on whether this was deliberate.

A witness told local outlet 12 News that the "black pickup truck came plowing through the youth soccer fields, hitting multiple people before stopping 100-200 yards down the fields." Dozens of emergency responders were seen giving CPR and rendering aid. The incident happened around 3:25 p.m. on a Saturday — families watching kids play soccer, the most ordinary American scene imaginable, turned into a killing field.

Moses confirmed "two fatalities" at the scene — one adult, one child — and said "multiple other casualties" were transported to area hospitals. The extent of their injuries is unknown. "This is a tragedy," Moses said. No argument there.

Here's what's not being said. Every outlet covering this — from The Guardian to Fox News — is working off the same thin police briefing. The Guardian described the perpetrator only as "a person" who drove a "vehicle" through the field. SFGATE, running an AP wire, did the same — "a person drove a vehicle" — with no mention of the truck description witnesses provided. The New York Post and WEAU were the only outlets to relay the witness account of a black pickup truck "plowing" and "mowing down" people. The rest sanitized the language into passive, bloodless constructions.

More critically: not a single outlet pressed on the driver's identity. Not one asked why police are withholding the name of someone already in custody for killing a child. Not one asked about the two juveniles in the vehicle — who they are, whether they're related to the driver, whether they were accomplices or hostages. The public is told to submit footage and trust investigators, while the most basic questions go unasked.

Mayor Lily Wu posted on social media that she was "heartbroken" and offered thoughts and prayers. That's nice. What the families in Wichita need is answers.

The Stryker Sports Complex is shut down until further notice. Wichita police said another update would come later in the evening. Whether that update includes the driver's name, motive, or criminal history — the things that would let the public judge whether this was a failure of the system — remains to be seen.
