A six-year-old who shot his first-grade teacher at point-blank range taunted responding officers — "I don't care if I go to jail" — and faced zero charges. The body cam footage from the January 2023 Richneck Elementary shooting, sealed for over a year, finally dropped this week, and it confirms what ordinary Americans already suspected: every institution designed to prevent this collapsed.
On January 6, 2023, at Richneck Elementary in Newport News, Virginia, first-grader J.T. pulled a 9mm Taurus from his hoodie pocket and fired at teacher Abby Zwerner from roughly ten feet away. The bullet tore through her left hand and lodged near her heart. Her lung collapsed. Zwerner still managed to escort her students out before passing out in the school office. The gun jammed after one shot with seven rounds still in the magazine — a Taurus quality-control failure that saved lives.
The body cam footage shows a child who speaks like a cornered suspect. "If you want a piece of me, come it all, bitch," J.T. told officers. "I stole that [gun] from my mom." "I don't care if you call backup...I don't care if I go to jail." This is not a kid who stumbled into a tragedy. This is a six-year-old already fluent in the language of violence — and no gatekeeper in his life stopped it.
J.T.'s mother was charged with lying on a federal background-check form when buying the handgun and possessing a firearm while being an unlawful user of marijuana. She was not charged with any responsibility for the shooting itself. According to ZeroHedge, the mother made excuses for the child and seemed to blame the teacher for imposing penalties for bad behavior in the classroom.
ZeroHedge framed the footage's delayed release as deliberate suppression during peak BLM-era racial activism, arguing that authorities went quiet because "the mere act of telling the truth about certain crimes was considered untenable if those crimes involved minority suspects." Whatever you make of that framing, the facts are stark: a six-year-old brought a loaded handgun to school, shot his teacher, taunted police, and walked without charges. His mother faces paperwork violations — not accountability for a near-fatal shooting.
The left will demand gun control before the tape finishes playing. But a six-year-old with a gun means the family failed, the school failed, social services failed, and the prosecutor failed. The gun didn't walk itself into that hoodie. Every institution charged with protecting Abby Zwerner abdicated — and she nearly bled out on an office floor because of it.
The open question: what becomes of J.T.? A child who tells cops he doesn't care about jail at age six doesn't age out of that mindset. He ages into it.
