Democrats swept Congress and their first move isn't fixing the border — it's hiring lawyers to investigate the Trump officials who tried to enforce it.

Americans still watching cartels operate with impunity and fentanyl pour into their communities might have expected the new Democratic majority to address the crisis. Instead, they're getting a staffing blitz for partisan warfare. The same party that spent years downplaying the border disaster now plans to make life miserable for the people who tried to do something about it.

According to Breitbart, Senate Democrats are already posting job openings for "sharp-toothed lawyers" to launch investigations into Trump's Department of Homeland Security. Senator Maggie Hassan — the New Hampshire Democrat set to chair the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee — is seeking an anti-corruption counsel with expertise in federal conflict-of-interest law, financial disclosures, and foreign influence rules, along with investigators and oversight counsel to lead what Mother Jones described as efforts to "rein in Immigration and Customs Enforcement."

Incoming House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair Robert Garcia (D-CA) had a two-word message for Trump officials: "Lawyer up."

The taunting has been bipartisan. Representative Delia Ramirez (D-IL) named specific targets on X — former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Stephen Miller, former acting ICE director Tom Homan, and former CBP commander Gregory Bovino — posting: "Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what's up? Clear your schedule." Hassan herself went after Noem on election night, challenging her to testify "under oath."

The day after the election, House Homeland Security Committee ranking member Bennie Thompson — likely the next chairman — dispatched a letter to Mullin demanding DHS preserve documents for pending probes. Democratic committee members posted on X: "If you broke the law to enrich yourself or your cronies at DHS at taxpayers' expense, We will find you and hold you accountable. That is a promise."

Meanwhile, HotAir reports that Democratic leadership may be struggling to manage its own flank. Chuck Schumer is backing investigations while Hakeem Jeffries tries to downplay impeachment talk, with a radical wing pushing leadership further than it bargained for. Thomas Massie is even pushing to force a Pete Hegseth impeachment vote before the new Congress convenes.

The picture is clear: investigations as performance, not governance. The same leaders who presided over an open border now plan to spend their majority harassing the officials who tried to close it — while the cartels keep moving product and American communities keep paying the tab.

The question is whether voters who just handed Democrats Congress did so to watch hearings, or to see the border secured.
