West Nile virus is back early and spreading across the country, and the best early-warning system your government can muster is a flock of chickens — because billions that could shore up domestic health infrastructure are being shipped to foreign wars and overseas labs instead.
The CDC warned in July that West Nile transmission started unusually early this year, with the most cases in early summer since 2004. In Delaware, the response was to deploy what officials call "sentinel chickens" — flocks of four birds each stationed at 20 locations across the state, a program dating back to the early 1980s. In Illinois, Grundy County health officials confirmed Friday that mosquitoes collected in Minooka on Sept. 8 tested positive for the virus, prompting the standard advisory: avoid dusk and dawn, wear DEET, dump standing water.
Tom Moran, who heads mosquito control at Delaware's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, put it plainly: the chickens "kind of are the proverbial canary in the coal mine." They test positive for West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis but can't spread the diseases, making them what Moran called the "old-school gold standard" for detection.
Some states have moved to testing mosquito pools, which can be faster — it takes about a week for chickens to develop antibodies after a bite. But Delaware tried both methods and stuck with the birds. "The chickens sometimes pick up virus activity in an area that the mosquito pools did not," Moran said. Unlike mosquitoes, the chickens stay put, giving officials certainty about where infected insects are active.
The Guardian framed the program as a charming throwback. Shaw Local's Grundy County report buried the implication entirely, offering nothing beyond a list of repellent tips and a link to a state website. Neither outlet asked the obvious question: why is a virus that can kill Americans still being tracked by poultry in the year 2026?
Delaware's sentinel chicken program has generated decades of data. Lindsay Campbell, an entomology associate professor at the University of Florida, digitized years of paper records from Florida's health department and mosquito control programs, combining that with environmental data and bird migration patterns to build predictive models. The research is useful. It is also underfunded — built on records collected by a low-tech program that survives on inertia, not investment.
West Nile kills Americans. Eastern equine encephalitis kills Americans. Meanwhile, Washington writes blank checks for overseas commitments that have nothing to do with the safety of the people paying for them. The sentinel chickens do their job. The question is why, after decades, that job still falls to them — and what it says about where this government's priorities actually lie.
