A drug-resistant fungus that kills up to 60% of those it infects has spread to 23 states this year with over 3,100 cases identified—and the establishment press is reporting every number except the one that matters: how a pathogen first identified overseas walked right into the country.
Candida auris, a yeast the CDC itself labels labeled an "urgent antimicrobial resistance threat," has surged across the U.S. with Texas leading at 706 cases, Michigan at 503, and Illinois at 366, according to CDC data released through July 18. The fungus spreads through contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces—surviving on bedrails and doorknobs for weeks—and can be transmitted by people who show zero symptoms. Some strains are resistant to all three classes of antifungal medication. A CDC analysis of over 8,000 samples found more than 95% resisted fluconazole, a first-line treatment; 15% resisted amphotericin B; and some strains shrugged off everything available.
Here is what the outlets agree on: the bug is here, it is spreading in hospitals and nursing homes, and it is dangerous. The New York Post called it a "superbug" and noted the mortality estimate of 30–60%. The Houston Chronicle and ABC7 Chicago both emphasized that healthy people are at low risk. UTHealth Houston epidemiologist Catherine Troisi told the Chronicle the risk is "relatively small." Vanderbilt's William Schaffner told Healthline it is "not a problem among the general public."
Maybe. But that framing buries the lede. The people most at risk—elderly Americans in acute care, patients on breathing tubes and catheters—are precisely the people who cannot advocate for themselves. And every single outlet treated the pathogen's arrival in the United States as a fait accompli. The Post noted the fungus was identified in Japan in 2009 and first reported in the U.S. in 2016. ABC7 added that Korean researchers discovered it even earlier, in 1996. Not one outlet asked the obvious question: through what vector did a pathogen native to East Asia enter the American healthcare system?
ABC7 noted that the rate of increase has slowed since 2022, as though that should reassure anyone paying attention. The raw numbers are still climbing—3,130 cases so far this year, consistent with last year's pace. The Chronicle, for its part, offered hand-washing tips.
The public health establishment and the press that covers for it have a consistent habit: report the threat, refuse to investigate the origin if the answer might implicate open borders or mass migration. Candida auris emerged simultaneously on three continents in the 2010s. The CDC has never clearly explained how it seeded into American healthcare facilities. What we do know is that a nation that cannot control who crosses its borders cannot control what crosses with them—pathogens included.
The fungus is here. The press won't ask how. Americans in hospital beds are paying the price.
