Over 20 million seniors will receive $90 checks this month from the federal government, a one-time payment to offset Medicare Part B premiums that ballooned under Biden-era inflation — and the amount is already drawing smirks from the same press corps that couldn't be bothered to flinch when grocery prices doubled.
President Trump announced the payments Friday, drawing on the Medicare Improvement Fund, a pot of money Congress created in 2008 and then basically forgot. Trump called it "a pointless 'Slush Fund' that has only been used by Dumocrats in Congress to pay for the Waste, Fraud, and Abuse for their Special Interest friends, and drive up Healthcare costs." Now his administration is actually spending it on the people it was supposedly for.
Eligible Medicare Part B enrollees will get the payment by direct deposit or paper check. Not everyone qualifies: seniors whose premiums are already covered by Medicaid or who pay an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount are excluded.
The New York Post reported Trump's Truth Social post in full, where he tied the payment directly to the inflation squeeze seniors have been feeling. "I pledged to protect and preserve Medicare and Social Security, which were on the verge of RUIN by Joe Biden, who foolishly and maliciously let tens of millions of Illegal Aliens into our Country, and we are doing just that for America's Seniors," Trump wrote.
This isn't the only refund heading out. The administration previously announced $500 checks for roughly 950,000 Obamacare enrollees — money the White House says comes from the Biden administration overcharging user fees to insurers, who passed those costs to consumers. Trump was careful to distinguish the two: the $90 senior payment is "separate from the equally substantial Refund 'Checks' we are sending to One Million Americans who were overcharged for their Unaffordable Care Act plans by Joe Biden."
Then came the pitch. "Because I delivered on this very important issue for the American People, they can also rest assured the highly popular $5,000 Trump Dividend will be distributed to every US citizen if, and when, the Republicans win the Midterm Elections!" Trump added.
Ninety dollars won't make anybody rich. Everybody knows that. But the same commentators already reaching for their keyboards to mock the amount are the ones who spent four years telling you transitory inflation wasn't real, that your grocery bill wasn't actually up 20 percent, and that the economy was the envy of the world. The check is small because the fund was small. The inflation that made it necessary wasn't small at all.
The real question isn't whether $90 is enough. It's whether either party has any intention of fixing the structural mess — Medicare's fiscal trajectory, the deficit, the immigration-driven strain on public services — that makes these one-off checks necessary in the first place. A slush fund rebate is better than a slush fund giveaway. It's not a plan.
