A 28-year-old lab technician is dead and nearly 200 people are under quarantine after a plague leak at a Russian research institute in Siberia — and the same western public-health establishment that spent years branding lab-leak questions as disinformation has nothing to say about it.

Darya Shipilova, a technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute, told hospital staff she broke a test tube holding live bacteria while gathering samples, according to The Moscow Times, as reported by the Daily Caller. She was admitted September 29 and died two days later on a ventilator. The illness has been described as pneumonic plague, the deadliest and most contagious form, which attacks the lungs and spreads through airborne droplets with an incubation period as short as a day, Newsweek reported.

Why it matters: The same class of experts and institutions that smeared anyone who asked whether COVID-19 came from a lab now face a straightforward, documented lab-origin outbreak of one of history's deadliest diseases — and their credibility is shot. When Russian officials edit social media posts to soften the facts and the FSB escorts quarantine ambulances, Americans have every reason to distrust the official narrative.

Authorities isolated nearly 200 people who may have crossed paths with Shipilova, hospitalizing 189 for monitoring across multiple facilities, Above the Norm News reported. Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev said the health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor launched a full set of anti-epidemic measures. Officials canceled public gatherings and opened a criminal case into possible safety violations, The Moscow Times reported. Kobzev added on Telegram that contacts showed no symptoms and tested negative.

But the official story has holes. Alexey Tsydenov, head of the neighboring Buryatia region, first wrote that the woman had died of plague — then edited his post to say she "may have died" of it, Meduza reported. No agency issued a formal notice of her death. One account cited by Meduza claimed she fell ill after a trip to Thailand rather than from any lab accident.

Epidemiologist Alex Washburne, writing on Substack, doubted the official version, noting that a single broken tube at a facility staffed by roughly 90 scientists would not usually force 200 people into quarantine.

HotAir highlighted the national-security dimension: Anna Popova, who heads Russia's public-health watchdog, rushed 2,600 miles from Moscow to Irkutsk. FSB units — Russia's domestic security service, successor to the KGB — accompanied ambulances transporting contacts for medical examination, local news reported. That means Russian authorities are treating this as a national-security matter, not a routine public-health event. The quarantine was not voluntary.

The Russian political insider channel Nezygar warned: "The situation in Shelekhov, Irkutsk region, where a plague quarantine has been declared, resembles the Wuhan case."

The bacterium behind pneumonic plague, Yersinia pestis, responds to antibiotics when caught early, Newsweek reported. The WHO logged close to 4,000 suspected cases across 10 countries from 2019 to 2025. Russia's last known infection before this incident struck a 10-year-old in 2016, according to Meduza.

HotAir framed the story around the broader pattern of dangerous gain-of-function and biolab research, explicitly invoking Fauci and Western government funding of risky research. The Daily Caller stuck closer to the incident facts, reporting the quarantine numbers and the cover-up signals without connecting it to the domestic credibility crisis. Both outlets noted the Wuhan parallel; neither pressed the question of whether Western money or collaboration touched this Russian institute.

The plague is studied because it remains endemic to certain regions, and researchers track whether drug-resistant varieties are developing. HotAir's initial suspicion of bioweapons research appears unlikely; the Irkutsk institute was built for surveillance, not weapons.

A 28-year-old woman is dead from a disease she was supposed to be studying safely. Two hundred people are locked down. The FSB is involved. And the people who told you to trust the experts on Wuhan want you to believe this is all under control.
