A Tennessee mother drove her SUV off a 25-foot cliff while drunk and delusional with her two children inside, and an Arizona father beat, stabbed, and ran over his pregnant wife in a psychotic break. Both parents exhibited unmistakable signs of severe mental illness. Neither got help before the damage was done.

This is what system failure looks like. Chase Ryan Klinedinst, 30, was slurring her speech, combative with medics, and suffering from "paranoia and delusions" when Hamilton County deputies found her after the September 7 crash, according to AL.com, citing an affidavit obtained by Chattanooga's Local 3. An empty wine bottle and a cold, unopened one sat in the passenger area. One child suffered a fractured forearm and wrist, severe lung bruising, and leg abrasions. Klinedinst was placed on a psychiatric hold — after the SUV was already at the bottom of a ravine.

Joseph Clark, 49, called police in Vail, Arizona, on October 11 to report he'd killed his wife, according to the New York Post, citing charging documents obtained by KOLD. He'd beaten 39-year-old Noelle Clark with a belt in their children's bedroom, stabbed her in the chest, dragged her body to the garage, and run her over with a vehicle. Tire marks covered her arms. She was pregnant with their third child. Their 2- and 5-year-old sat unharmed on the stairs inside.

Once in custody, Clark claimed his wife had been "torturing" and "shocking" him for two years, causing his teeth to "pop out from being zapped." Police found no sign of obvious injuries to support the claim — the telltale marker of genuine psychosis, not an excuse.

AL.com reported Klinedinst's psychiatric hold and intoxication details straightforwardly. The Post went full sensational — "deranged dad" in the headline — but buried the obvious psychosis driving Clark's actions beneath the gore. Neither outlet asked the question that matters: where was the system before these people broke?

Klinedinst is charged with DUI, two counts of child neglect, and vehicular assault. Bond: $10,000. Clark faces two counts of second-degree murder. Bond: $1 million. Both will move through a criminal justice system that is now the only public institution paying attention to severe mental illness in this country — and only after the bodies are counted.

Washington sends billions to foreign wars and funnels cash into youth gender clinics while Americans drowning in addiction and psychosis get nothing until they surface in a courtroom or a morgue. Klinedinst's paranoia and Clark's delusions didn't appear the day they snapped. Somebody saw something. Nobody with the power to intervene did anything.
