One year after Charlie Kirk was assassinated on a Utah campus, Turning Point USA's college chapters have surged 64% and its high school clubs are up 180% — the exact opposite of what the establishment hoped when a bullet silenced his voice.
Kirk's murder was supposed to end a threat to institutional power. Instead, it became the fuel. According to the New York Post, TPUSA's explosive growth since the 2025-26 school year proves that eliminating a voice doesn't eliminate the ideas. The message from everyday Americans: you can't kill a movement by killing a man.
Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of Kirk's death, and Utah Valley University — where 23-year-old Tyler Robinson allegedly gunned him down on September 10, 2025 — has canceled classes for the day. TPUSA returns to the Orem campus that evening for its "Freedom Built to Last Memorial" at the UCCU Center, which will also be livestreamed.
"The gathering will honor Charlie as a faith-filled husband, father, and defender of free speech with a memorial that serves as a deliberate act of remembrance and a call for students and supporters to continue his life's work," TPUSA said in a statement.
But the campus left hasn't learned much. Students for a Democratic Society is planning to protest the memorial, claiming in an open letter that UVU is preparing to "hand over our campus" to TPUSA. They accused university president Jon Anderson of "aligning himself with the interests" of the organization and called TPUSA "openly racist and antagonistic." They even accused the group of promoting "a narrative of victimhood" — for memorializing their assassinated founder. A leaked recording obtained by Gateway Pundit showed SDS members plotting to make the event "as uncomfortable as possible for people to get in."
Anderson defended allowing the memorial, stressing the university is not sponsoring it. "As an institution, it's important that we stay apolitical, that we don't jump in the fray," he said. "Any entity could've used that space, and they chose to have that day. And we allowed them to do that."
The movement's reach now extends far beyond Utah. Memorial events are planned from New York City to Sydney, Australia. The New York Young Republican Club says its membership has grown "exponentially" since the assassination. "Without a doubt, Charlie even in death has inspired so many people," club president Stefano Forte told the Post. "Charlie's work translated into voter registration. It translated into volunteers. It translated into political action."
National Republicans will honor Kirk with a tribute at their midterm convention in Dallas. In his hometown of Arlington Heights, Illinois, the local GOP will simulcast the Orem memorial and hold its own vigil. Kirk's widow, Erika, will mark the anniversary privately with their two young children.
Last week, a judge ruled Robinson can stand trial for aggravated murder and six other charges. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.
The assassin's bullet stopped one voice. It didn't stop the question Kirk spent his life asking: who controls what your kids learn, and who gets to speak on campus? That question is louder now than ever — and every new TPUSA chapter is an answer the establishment never wanted.
