A teacher shot at close range in an Oregon elementary school says her only option was to play dead—because in a gun-free zone, that's all the law allows the law-abiding to do.

Becky Drury, 54, couldn't defend herself or her special needs students when 16-year-old Griffin John entered her classroom at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend on Oct. 15. Her left hand was nearly severed and her right arm severely injured by a blast from a Maverick 88 12-gauge shotgun. She fell to the ground and pretended to be a corpse, hoping the killer wouldn't shoot her again. Three boys—ages 5, 8, and 11—and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert died. A wheelchair-bound 7-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

The shooting was stopped not by any school security measure, not by any lockdown protocol, but by a father with a gun. Kaylub Giamanco, whose two daughters attend Silver Rail, saw the teen fire at a truck and enter the school, then followed him inside and shot him dead as another teacher wrestled with him over the weapon, according to police.

Drury released a statement Wednesday to correct the record. Bend police had previously said she shielded a student during the attack. Not so. "I was shot before I had any chance to act," she said. "I could not get up, defend myself, or protect anyone else. So, I did the only thing I could do, which was to pretend to be dead in the hope he would not shoot me again."

Another teacher in the classroom threw her cellphone at the shooter and tackled him to the floor. A phone. Against a shotgun. That's what passes for a fighting chance in a gun-free school.

NBC News reported that investigators are examining whether John viewed extremist material online, including content tied to so-called "nihilistic violent extremism." The shotgun was purchased legally—NBC's law enforcement sources say John's mother bought it in August, around his birthday.

While the community grieved, Rep. Janelle Bynum, D-Ore., used the moment to demand ICE halt enforcement operations in Deschutes County, claiming immigration agents were scaring families away from counseling and support services. The Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition could confirm only a single ICE arrest in the area since July. The Salem Statesman Journal gave Bynum's press play anyway. The angle: the real villains are federal agents enforcing immigration law, not the policies that left a teacher bleeding on the floor with nothing but play-acting to save her life.

Drury remains hospitalized after surgery on her left arm and right hand. Silver Rail Elementary is closed indefinitely. The district reopened other schools with dozens of officers stationed at each one—the same armed presence that gun-free zone advocates insist children should never be near, until the alternative arrives.

An armed parent stopped the killing. An unarmed teacher could only play dead. The question isn't whether something should change. It's which fact the establishment press will keep burying.
