Students are outsourcing their coursework to chatbots, and the only answer the establishment can muster is: you're only hurting yourself. The real story is that a chatbot can substitute for four years of schoolwork and nobody notices — because the system wasn't measuring learning in the first place.
The Boston Globe framed the AI cheating wave as a moral failing on the part of students, warning that cheating "undermines their learning" and punishes honest peers who "stay up late studying" only to end up with transcripts indistinguishable from the corner-cutters. The Globe buried the real implication: if AI can replace the work and nobody can tell the difference, the work was never doing what they claimed it was doing.
The evidence is damning. Princeton University — one of the oldest and most respected institutions in the country — announced it would assign proctors to watch students during exams because too many are using AI to cheat. A century-old Honor Code, gone. As the Globe reported, when a university that prestigious no longer trusts its own students, it "reveals how difficult it has become for schools to maintain academic integrity." Difficult, or impossible — because the assignments themselves were already hollow enough for a machine to complete them.
Schools are scrambling backward — more in-class writing on paper, phone bans, smart watch prohibitions — all to preserve the fiction that the essay, the worksheet, and the exam still measure something real. Newton Country Day School's policy, as the Globe noted, tells students AI should be a "support tool" rather than a replacement. But when teachers have "few foolproof methods" of knowing whether students are honest, the policy is theater.
Meanwhile, New York City's specialized high schools — the so-called crown jewels of the public system — released their latest admissions data, and the numbers tell the same story of a system that confuses credentials with competence. According to the Daily News, just 3.5% of offers went to Black students and 6.5% to Hispanic students. At Stuyvesant, three out of 777 offers went to Black test-takers. Asian students received 56.5% of offers, white students 23.5%. The Daily News framed this as a diversity crisis. Mayor Mamdani, a Bronx Science alumnus who once opposed the single-test admissions system, flip-flopped during his campaign and now supports an "independent analysis" of the entrance exam for bias — a review that, when the Daily News asked about its status, City Hall did not answer.
A spokeswoman for Mamdani said the city must "root out the deep racial and economic inequities" in public schools. A schools spokeswoman insisted officials are "proud of the progress we've made." They are simultaneously proud and outraged, and neither claim is credible.
Here is the connective tissue the establishment won't name: the same credentialing machine that AI can game is the one producing admissions numbers nobody can defend. When a chatbot can write your essay and a single test can lock out two-thirds of the city's schoolchildren, the problem isn't the tool or the test — it's that the academy replaced education with paperwork and called it merit.
AI didn't break the system. It walked into a building that was already condemned and held up a mirror. The question isn't how to stop students from cheating or how to engineer better demographics. The question is what happens when millions of Americans realize the credentials they were told mattered never measured anything real.
