A California student — not a federal agency, not a school security apparatus — stopped a mass stabbing plotted for the 25th anniversary of 9/11 at a Fresno high school.
While Washington ships billions overseas and intelligence agencies posture against foreign adversaries, American schools remain soft targets. The government's first and most basic job is protecting its own citizens. It's failing, and the proof is piling up.
According to the New York Post, a friend of the suspect sent a warning message about the planned attack at Duncan Polytechnical High School: "There is going to be a mass stabbing at Duncan High School on September 11th, this is not a joke, or a hoax. My friend who goes to Duncan is planning an attack on Duncan for unknown reasons other than how he doesn't like people." The message added: "PLEASE believe me, do not go to school l[on] September 11th if you go to Duncan."
That message traveled from student to student, then to a parent, and finally to the Fresno Police Department. A minor juvenile was arrested and booked into custody. No other arrests are expected. Fresno Unified School District said the threat originated in a social media chat and that the school resource officer identified the suspect.
It wasn't the state that saved these kids. It was a student who refused to stay silent.
The same week, other American schools showed their own cracks. In Calaveras County, California, a parent smashed through the glass door of a school bus and climbed inside to confront the driver after students texted home that the bus had stopped due to rowdy behavior, Live 5 News reported. Video obtained by KOVR shows students climbing out windows while an adult woman leaps over seats. The parent was arrested for vandalism. The superintendent called it a "student behavior incident" — a sterile label for chaos.
And in Manassas Park, Virginia, a high school teacher showed up to work drunk. WJLA reported that school staff flagged Shannon Sanders, 40, to a school resource officer at 7:30 a.m. on August 27. Police determined she was "highly intoxicated" and charged her with being drunk in public. She was held at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center until sober. Authorities said no students were "involved or placed in danger" — though what that means when a drunk adult is supervising children went unexplained.
Three schools, three failures. A stabbing plot stopped by a kid, a bus turned into a battering ram, a teacher too drunk to stand. The federal government can find money for every foreign cause on the planet. It can't keep American children safe in a classroom.
The question isn't whether these incidents are connected. It's why the people who claim to govern this country keep proving they can't protect the people who actually live in it.
