Private security guards are now posted at Thomas Markle Sr.'s senior living facility in Lakeland, Florida, after the 82-year-old was arrested by the FBI on a federal child pornography charge and released on bond.

TMZ identified the guards as Hammerhead Security, with photos showing at least one wearing a camouflaged armored vest while others in black patrolled the outdoor premises of Maravida Senior Living. Us Weekly separately reported three guards visible — one on a balcony, one walking the perimeter, and one near the front entrance. Markle has not been seen at the facility since his arrest.

The FBI took Markle into custody on Friday in Tampa. According to Us Weekly, FBI Director Kash Patel stated: "Mr. Markle allegedly targeted innocent children and sought to steal their innocence through his criminal actions." First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said Markle is accused of possessing material "including photographs depicting himself with minor girls."

The investigation spans multiple countries. TMZ reported that authorities in the Philippines classified the material they analyzed as belonging to a sex offender of the "grossest kind," and that Mexican officials raided a separate storage unit Markle rented in Rosario. The FBI searched two storage units Markle maintained in California, per Us Weekly.

The case originated with Markle's own son. Thomas Markle Jr., 60, claimed in October that he discovered child sexual abuse material in boxes at his father's home in the Philippines and went to authorities. The elder Markle denied the accusations in a statement to the Daily Mail: "I could never do what I'm being accused of. It's the worst thing anyone could accuse me of. This is bulls***. It's just a bunch of lies." He also stated he has never slept with anyone underage, according to TMZ.

Meghan Markle, who has been estranged from her father since 2018, issued a statement last month after the allegations surfaced. "I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed," she told Us Weekly. She claimed a letter sent to the Metropolitan Police in 2018 contained "troubling and disturbing allegations" against her father, and said her decision to cut contact was made "to protect" her children.

Us Weekly framed Meghan's statement as a vindication of her estrangement, noting she blamed "certain media publications' distortion over the years." TMZ kept the focus on the security deployment and the multi-nation scope of the investigation. Neither outlet pressed on why, if Meghan possessed information serious enough to involve London police in 2018, the matter apparently stalled until her brother went to American authorities this fall.

Thomas Markle Sr. faces one count of possession of child pornography. He is presumed innocent unless convicted. The question that lingers is what the Duchess knew, when she knew it, and whether royal institutional protection delayed accountability for a man now accused of crimes against children.
