Married mother of three Alanis Morissette has declared herself "pansexual" while remaining married to her husband of 14 years — another celebrity ritual that treats sexual identity as a fashion accessory while ordinary families are told the traditional family is obsolete.

The 52-year-old Canadian singer made the announcement on the November 3 episode of the "Handsome" podcast, hosted by Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, and Mae Martin. When Feimster asked Morissette whether her bad experiences with men ever made her "want to be a lesbian at any point," Morissette responded: "I'm pansexual, so, yeah." Notaro appeared skeptical, asking, "Wait, you're not really pansexual, are you?" Morissette confirmed: "I am," and joked, "I like to leave it for the epilogue."

The Post Millennial defines pansexual as "emotional or sexual attraction to someone despite their sex." Yahoo frames it as "attracted to people of all genders." Either way, Morissette is living it from inside a conventional marriage. She has been married to rapper Mario "Souleye" Treadway since 2010. They share three children: Ever, Onyx, and Winter.

Morissette previously told the "Call Her Daddy" podcast about an "amazing" kiss with Sarah Jessica Parker during a "Sex and the City" episode — a scene she says she personally pitched. "I reached out to them and I said, 'Might it be a nice time for Carrie to experience a lesbian moment?'" Morissette said, according to The Post Millennial.

Before her marriage, Morissette dated Dave Coulier, Dash Mihok, and was engaged to Ryan Reynolds from 2004 to 2007. She told the Los Angeles Times she was "a full-blown love addict" and that breakups were "debilitating." She dated Tom Ballanco from 2007 to 2009 before meeting Treadway. In 2020, she told People she and her husband were "helping each other out" and that the relationship was "getting juicy" in its third phase of mutual growth.

Yahoo's coverage presents the announcement as straightforward personal news, listing her dating history and marriage without noting the apparent tension between a pansexual declaration and a 14-year heterosexual marriage with three children. The Post Millennial simply notes the basic facts of her family life alongside the identity claim.

Morissette says she's pansexual. She also says she's happily married to a man and raising three children. The entertainment industry calls that progress. Most Americans just call it a family.
