A 15-year-old girl in Louisiana will spend the next six years in state custody — the maximum juvenile sentence — for delivering a full-term baby alone in her bedroom and then killing the newborn, and the same system that sentenced her has no answer for what broke her in the first place.
Why it matters: The district attorney's office celebrated the sentence as justice for the victim, and it is — but a girl who carries a pregnancy to term in secret, delivers a child with no one present, and then kills it isn't just a criminal. She's a product of every institution that failed to notice she was drowning.
According to WIS10, the teen delivered a full-term baby in her bedroom in 2025 before taking the child's life. The baby's body was later found in a tote bag in the girl's bedroom. Judge Matthew Belser handed down the sentence on Monday — custody until her 21st birthday, the maximum allowed for a juvenile.
The state sought to prosecute her as an adult for first-degree murder, but the court denied the transfer after a hearing, citing her age. District Attorney Scott Perrilloux called it "an unusual and horribly sad case" and praised his team for "bringing justice for this innocent victim." Assistant ADA Kinchen-Gros prosecuted the case in the Juvenile Division of Louisiana's 21st Judicial District.
Justice for the baby, certainly. But the word does a lot of work for a system that apparently had no contact with this girl before she became a killer. A teenager hides a full-term pregnancy, delivers alone, commits the most primal act of violence against her own child — and the institutional response is to lock her up for six years and call it resolved.
Where were the adults? Where was the school? Where was the family? A girl who believes the only option is to deliver a child in secret and kill it has been told, by someone or something, that this life didn't matter and that no one would help her. The sentence addresses the crime. It doesn't touch the cause.
The same culture of youth violence plays out elsewhere. In Washington, D.C., a 17-year-old boy was just charged with second-degree murder after shooting 14-year-old Zytina Mason-Brown in the head during a TikTok video, according to MassLive. The girl had pushed him away when he jumped into her recording. He sat down and shot her. He had prior carjacking and robbery accusations. Photos of Mason-Brown's body circulated on social media.
Two cases. Two dead children. Two teenage killers. The courts handle each one. The culture that produced them remains untouched.
The court sentenced a child to six years for killing a child. The people and institutions that failed them both face no accounting at all.
