A 21-year-old murder suspect is on the run after allegedly gunning down a 33-year-old man following a bar argument in Montgomery County — the kind of violence that leaves working Americans wondering why the system only seems to act after someone is already dead.
Montgomery County police have secured an arrest warrant for Shayan Solimani Damabi of Gaithersburg, charging him with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime. The victim, Nicholes Njuki, was shot and killed Sept. 13 after a confrontation that started inside Quincy's on Seven Locks Road in Rockville and ended in the street nearby, according to WJLA.
Police say Njuki and Solimani Damabi argued inside the restaurant. Njuki then left with a companion in a vehicle. But the confrontation wasn't over. Near Fortune Terrace and Northside Park Boulevard, the two ran into Solimani Damabi again in a separate vehicle. Njuki got out and approached the suspect's car. That's when Solimani Damabi allegedly shot him — then fired at Njuki's companion, who drove away.
Officers arrived around 2:02 a.m. to find Njuki with an apparent gunshot wound. He died at the scene despite efforts to save him. Loved ones have set up a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs.
Solimani Damabi remains at large. He may be driving a red, four-door 2018 Acura TLX with Maryland license plate 3GD6732. He's described as roughly 6'2" and 205 pounds. The same week, a different kind of predator was finally caught in neighboring Fairfax County. Former healthcare executive Shawn Gremminger, 44, was arrested Aug. 27 at Reagan National Airport after detectives used automated license plate reader technology to identify him as the suspect in multiple unlawful filming incidents in the Tysons area, WTOP reported. Gremminger, the former president and CEO of the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchasers Coalition, allegedly used his cellphone to record three victims — two 18-year-old women and a 16-year-old girl — across multiple stores on Aug. 16 and 17. He faces charges including production of child pornography and 30 counts of possession of child pornography. He's being held without bond, and detectives say they've found evidence of additional victims on his devices.
Two very different crimes, one common thread: the system reacts after the damage is done. Solimani Damabi now faces murder charges, but Njuki is already dead. Gremminger roamed free until license plate readers — not proactive policing — finally identified him.
What the public doesn't yet know is whether Solimani Damabi had any prior record that should have kept him off the streets. Montgomery County's approach to prosecution and bail has faced growing scrutiny from critics who say it prioritizes offenders over public safety. Whether that played any role here remains an open question — one the public deserves answered before the next argument turns fatal.
