An 18-year-old Minnesota man pledged allegiance to ISIS and planned to massacre shoppers at the Mall of America on October 24 — and he was born on American soil to Somali nationals who entered the country through New York City in 2000, later becoming naturalized citizens. The foiled plot proves what Washington refuses to admit: the border and immigration pipeline aren't just economic questions. They're survival questions.
Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud was arrested Tuesday after paying $600 to an undercover FBI employee posing as an ISIS member for an AK-47 and 200 rounds of ammunition, according to federal court documents. He targeted the Hmong Arts Celebration at the Mall of America because, he told an informant, "it will be a lot of people." He estimated he'd kill between 30 and 60.
The affidavit lays bare the ideology driving the plot. Mohamud messaged that he wanted to attack the mall "because its owned by jewish so if i kill even 30 people noone would go there anymore. I want to harm the jew just like the brothers in australia bondi beach harmed the jews." He also wrote that he wanted to "start killing a bunch of white ppl" to ensure he was shot by police rather than arrested — fearing prison rape — and that he considered white people likely to be "kuffar," or non-believers.
U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said Mohamud faces charges for receiving a firearm knowing it would be used in an act of terrorism and for providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. FBI Minneapolis Special Agent in Charge Christopher Dotson said Mohamud described himself as "100 percent committed" to what Dotson called his "planned jihad journey." Because he could not travel abroad to fight for ISIS, he chose to bring the attack here.
Here is the question the establishment press will not ask: how did this happen on our soil? Fox News reported that Mohamud was born in the United States to Somali nationals who arrived through a New York City airport in 2000 — though it remains unclear whether they entered on visas or as refugees. His mother naturalized in 2010, his father in 2017. The Daily Caller and HotAir both identified Mohamud as an American citizen of Somali descent but omitted the parents' immigration timeline. That detail matters. The Somali refugee resettlement program deposited a community in Minnesota, and two decades later, an American-born son of that pipeline was plotting mass murder in the name of a foreign caliphate. HotAir framed the arrest with sarcasm about diversity — "another persuasive example of how diversity increases our strength" — but the joke lands because the underlying reality is grim.
The FBI investigation began around December 2024 and involved a confidential human source who communicated with Mohamud for nearly two years over encrypted platforms. He expressed admiration for the Bourbon Street attack in New Orleans, the Pulse nightclub shooting, and the Bondi Beach Hanukkah shooting, according to the complaint. He floated joining al Qaeda and al Shabaab before settling on ISIS.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau has stopped over 1,100 individuals from conducting attacks and achieved a 38% increase in foreign terrorist organization-related disruptions and arrests. President Trump praised the FBI's handling of the case.
An FBI sting caught this one. The next one might not need a confidential informant to find a gun. The pipeline that brought Mohamud's parents here is still running. That's the open question no one in Washington wants to answer.
