The Democratic Socialists of America want to open the border, hand out amnesty, and expand federal benefits to every illegal alien in the country — and the White House says that wishlist will run you between $440 billion and $613 billion over the next decade.
A new Council of Economic Advisers report puts the lifetime net fiscal cost of every illegal immigrant at $166,716. Run that number across the illegal alien population already inside the United States and you get a total taxpayer liability between $1.4 trillion and $1.9 trillion. That is the price tag for replacing the American worker with a subsidized underclass, and you are already on the hook.
The bulk of the cost is benefits, not enforcement. Opening food stamps, federal housing assistance, and Medicaid to illegal aliens legalized under a mass amnesty would add $361 billion to $475 billion over ten years, according to the CEA. Medicaid alone accounts for as much as $40 billion a year. Food stamps add another $3.6 billion to $4.7 billion annually, and housing assistance runs $2.3 billion to $3 billion per year.
On top of that, the council estimates that unwinding the current enforcement crackdown would wipe out $227 billion to $287 billion in projected taxpayer savings. Subtract what Washington would no longer spend on enforcement and the net ten-year cost still lands between $79 billion and $139 billion.
Fox News highlighted a useful comparison: that $166,716 per-person lifetime cost exceeds the roughly $124,000 it takes to put a student through four years at an in-state public university, including room and board, per College Board figures. Breitbart focused on the benefit breakdown and the broader DSA agenda. Both outlets confirmed the same CEA numbers.
The DSA's ambitions do not stop at the border. The same White House report prices out eight policy pillars the administration attributes to the socialists — Medicare for All, universal rent control, the Green New Deal, a 32-hour workweek, a billionaire wealth tax, and abolishing police and prisons among them. Added up, the council puts the net cost at roughly $49 trillion over ten years, or about $355,000 per American household.
