We would have been hit by the earthquake if we had gone down from the other side. I was taking pictures of the visitors here. Then, when we were receiving tips from the visitors, the earthquake struck the brick temple. It suddenly fell down.”“This brick temple is our livelihood, where people sold flowers here, and guides explained to visitors about its history. We are heartbroken that it collapsed. It is as if a family member had died.”The 36-year-old is among several locals who depended on selling flowers and souvenirs, guiding tours, and taking photos for temple visitors, for a living.The death toll from the powerful quake that hit on March 28 rose to 3,471, state media reported, with 4,671 people injured and another 214 still missing.Myanmar's military has struggled to run the country since overthrowing the government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, leaving the economy and basic services, including healthcare, in tatters, a situation exacerbated by the quake.
