It should absolutely be determined state-by-state, but states shouldn't be able to charge their residents for doing something in another state which is legal in that other state. That's my only complaint with the Alabama law.

Jonathan Haidt's research has shown that most people don't care about truth. The left doesn't even really care about consistent principles (except the principle to get wins for the most oppressed in the progressive stack).
States should be able to ban abortion or not, but shouldn't be able to block people from doing things in other states which are legal in those states. This cuts both ways though. If California wants to ban "assault weapons," they could, but they couldn't stop a Californian from buying such a gun in another state so long as they didn't bring it into California.
