A newborn baby girl was safely surrendered at a Racine, Wisconsin, Fire Department using their new Safe Haven Baby Box on October 16.This is the first time one of the boxes has been used since a 2023 law legalized their use in Wisconsin. Since last year, seven of the boxes have been installed throughout the state.The fire department reported that the baby girl was taken to the hospital for evaluation before being released to child protective services in good health.<mediatag id=3984969></mediatag>CEO of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, Monica Kelsey, said in a statement,This mother's decision was not abandonment — it was an act of love. She chose life. She chose safety. She chose hope.Thanks to the baby box, the mother was able to safely and legally surrender her baby anonymously in a climate-controlled box so that her daughter could be adopted.The baby was the 70th baby to be surrendered to a box nationwide. The Racine Fire Department thanked community members for their support in installing the baby box in a press release, saying,Their commitment to the safety and well-being of infants and families in crisis has made a lasting impact.<mediatag id=3984968></mediatag>
