Despite all the early mockery centered around nerds hiding in their Mom’s basement alone on the internet, the web has always been first and foremost a means of communication and socialization. The earliest internet applications were things like email and Usenet groups. All social media did was open the door for people who weren’t smart enough to use a computer to take part in the already social internet.
