STORY: :: Barcelona residents spray water pistols and set off smoke bombs in protest against mass tourism:: June 15, 2025:: Barcelona, Spain:: Vania Arana, Protester "We need responsible tourism, not mass tourism, but tourism that respects health, respects labour, respects dignity, and respects all of us who work in the tourism sector. Because what mass tourism brings us is poverty. We don’t benefit from this kind of tourism."Organized by the Assemblea de Barris pel Decreixement Turístic (Neighborhood Assembly for Tourism Degrowth), the demonstration featured symbolic actions such as squirting water pistols, setting off coloured smoke, and taping off hotel entrances, and setting off smoke bombs near luxury shops like Louis Vuitton. Activists say tourism is driving up housing costs, damaging the environment, and displacing residents.There were similar demonstrations in other parts of Spain including Ibiza, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, San Sebastian and Granada.
