In a challenge for Detroit, teens put off getting their licenses and buying cars. About a quarter of 16-year-olds had a driver’s license in 2017, a sharp decline from nearly half in 1983.

The decrease in adolescents buying cars is directly linked to the increase of adolescents living with their parents. If you can't afford to move out, you sure as hell can't afford a car.

Cars cost too much for teenagers to buy. Even used cars are ridiculous these days. And most parents can barely afford their own cars, much less afford one for their teens.

Cars or drugs? Drugs are winning over cars.

Car makers need to stop inflating the prices with unnecessary non-optional features. If you halved the average cost of new cars you'd triple the volume sold. Families could go back to being multi-car instead of having to focus on having one "all-purpose" shared vehicle.

Fuck these gen z losers. Autonomous cars will be the death of freedom. MOLON LABE.

Getting a DL to a teenager was about independence and freedom. Is it any surprise that they no longer want to drive.

That's good news for those of us driving. Kids behind the wheel are dangerous.

Such a shame, just shows the infantilization of these kids is almost complete. A car at that age represents so much more freedom and responsibility, they've been coddled so badly they now don't want it? Weeping for our future after reading this story and the story about Gen Z choosing not to have kids over "climate change"

Can't wait for self driving cars, driving is stressful and not fun. It doesn't feel like freedom with all the regulations you have to follow and fees you have to pay to be able to drive. A car is just an anchor around your leg.
