In Caesarea Philipi named by Herod's son Philip, there were two temples there, one to Caesar, and one to the god Pan, where day in and day out lewd, unmentionable, immoral acts were performed continually. Next to Pan's temple was a large crevice. It was thought by many to be the actual place where the dead spirits would go Hades/Sheol/Hell, when they died. When Jesus brought the 12 disciples there, and asked them, "but who do you say that I am?" They all knew of later verse's reference's meaning of "The gates of Hell would not prevail against them, and their endeavors for Christianity", standing right next to the propounded gate.
