Innocents don't return from a trip riding their girlfriend's van then running straight to a lawyer without even telling her parents about being back. I wish he gets charged with carjacking and made to tell everything about his crime.
The police are not your allies, and they will try to trap even the innocent in a lie so they can leverage it for a confession. There is nothing you can say to an officer that will ever serve you, it will always be twisted to their (police) purposes. In this case I believe there is strong suspicion that he may have had something to do with her disappearance, but without evidence they have nothing. The police first need to get evidence, and enough evidence to warrant an arrest, then they can act.
