Have always appreciated Mr. Buchanan's knowledge and opinion. Unfortunately, this revelation of JFK's advice seems about 60 years late in being brought before the nation. It is pretty much the opposite of what I heard over the radio when I walked home from 7th grade for lunch on January 20, 1961. The chilling words I can still hear him say were that the US would oppose any foe to assure the survival and success of liberty. The media and nation cheered; but in that time and atmosphere it sounded like a dangerous blank check to me, and that fear was validated a few years later by the November, 1963, Diem assassination and coup and US immersion in the Vietnam war.
