Merendel is discussing:

A bill backed by Gov. Ralph Northam that would ban the sale of assault-style weapons in Virginia failed on a committee vote Monday morning, setting back one of the biggest priorities for the newly minted Democrat-controlled government in the state.

"Assault weapons are not protected by the Second Amendment because they are weapons of war,"

Hate to break it to this moron but at the time the 2A was penned the average musket every frontiersman owned was cutting edge military tech. There was no distinction in the constitution between military and civilian firearms because they were one in the same. Heck if random joe farmer wanted to pay for a field cannon the founders would probably have said "Just make sure to bring it should we ever have to fight an invading force".
