It's not really about the great expenditure involved, and the value of universal internet access. It's what comes next that is so unappealing. Someone will be deciding what is decent, permissible discourse over this broadband. Imagine a bunch of useful idiots giving their rulers the coveted holy grail of societal manipulation. Almost as stupid as giving the national broadcaster a blank cheque.
