So, let’s be clear on this… Saying that it “only happened after other nonessential household goods had been taken,” and that they were “unable to find anything else to take” was the reason that they felt would explain their actions intelligently. That is to say, if you’d STARTED with the family pet, that would have just been heartless, but thankfully you had the decency to completely clean them out first, and only then take the dog too. That’s just so much better. Why not just look for gold teeth filings? At least there’s a precedent for that in Germany.
